Asus Eee PC 1000HG – a fancy netbook with 3G connectivity

Posted in Asus by Mike . 1 comment so far

Asus launched their first Eee PC a couple of years ago and since then they always tried to improve this segment with better and better models. Thus, the Eee PC 1000HG is one of their latest and also one of their best netbooks on the market. What makes it so special is the fact that it combines portability, performances, autonomy and looks in a fancy device that could even replace your everyday laptop.

Let’s see first what does the EEE PC 10ooHG offer in terms of configuration:

  • 10″ display (1024 x 600 px)
  • CPU: Intel Atom N270
  • RAM memory: 1GB DDR2 667 MHz
  • Graphic chip: Intel i945GME
  • Storing: Seagate 160GB HD 5400 rpm
  • Baterry: Li-Ion 6600mAh
  • Connectors: 3xUSB , 1xRJ45 , 1xVGA , audio
  • Conectivity: Wi-fi, Bluetooth and 3G
  • Others: MMC/SD/MS card reader, webcam

So, in terms of hardware specs, this netbook is similar to all the others: N270 Atom CPU, 1 GB of Ram and a 160 Gb hard drive. But let’s see what makes it different and better. First, it has an integrated 3G module. And this means you can have Internet almost anywhere you go, as long as there’s a 3G phone signal there . The SIM card slot is kind of misplaced though: just behind the battery. So if you’ll have to get it out and in , you won’t enjoy having to switch off the netbook and removing the battery every time.

And speaking of battery, this gadget has a 6 Cell 6600 mAh one, that will give the Eee PC 1000HG an autonomy of well beyond 5 hours. So, you get a very good battery life and wireless Internet through 3G. Pretty cool, ay?

Also, this Asus netbook brings on a decent sized screen (10″) and well proportioned keyboard and touchpad, so you won’t have big problems using them for a longer period of time. Overall build quality is nice, although plastic is omni present, but it’s a better quality plastic than the one used on regular notebooks. Plastic is still plastic though, so don’t expect anything out of ordinary.

All these features do have a down point though, making this gadget heavier than the other netbooks: it weights just around 1.5 Kilos. But that’s OK and won’t affect portability too much.

So, overall, the Asus EEE PC 1000HG is a very practical netbook and perhaps one of the best choices on the market. It gives you lots of advantages, with the only important bad part being the increased weight. The price will be a little high though, around $700 and the device should be available in stores from May 2009.

We might have to add that for those finding the 3G connectivity unusefull, Asus olso offers a version without it, the Eee PC 1000H, for a way better price (around $150 off), but we’re going to talk more about it in a future article. Till then, don’t hesitate to post your own opinions about the 1000HG Eee PC .
