Gateway just announced their new line of laptops for the second part of 2010, with up to date features and a new design, one that looks incredibly professional and reminds me somehow of the older ThinkPads.

The smaller of these new notebooks is the Gateway NS10I, an 11.6 incher. You can get an idea on how will it look from the picture below. Classic and sober, perfect for my taste at least. I just love the matte black exterior and what seems to be a full-size flat keyboard with a decent trackpad with independent click buttons. Still, more pictures would be great, however only this one is available for now.

In terms of specs and hardware, there are lots of options available fro this Gateway. Built on the new Intel Arrandale ULV platform, you can pick Core i3 or i5 processors (Intel Core i3-330UM, core i5-430UM, Core i5-520UM, and Core i5-540UM), backed up by the Intel HM55 chipset with Intel Integrated HD Graphics, plus 4 GB of DDR3 memory and up to 640 GB storage space. Wi-Fi N, 3G and Bluetooth 3.0 are available in terms of wireless connectivity, while USB, card-reader, Gigabit LAN or webcam are present too. Windows 7 Home or Professional are your picks in terms of OS and in terms of batteries, you can choose from a 3 Cell 23Wh or two 6 Cell ones (48 or 63 Wh) – enough for anything between 3 to 8 hours of life.

All these in a device measuring 11.2″ x 8.1″ x 1.1″ and weighing around 3 pounds (1.6 kilo).

Gateway NS10I - small, but versatile

All in all, this Gateway NS10I is definitely a device worth keeping a close eye on. The hardware it packs will allows it to run all your daily applications and even cope with multimedia content (1080P won’t be a problem). And its compact size and reduced weight make it a reliable travel companion.

I do expect it to be pricey though, but you probably expected that. Also, I’m looking forward to see it in some tests, as I’m worried that packing the new ULV Intel platform in such a small body might lead to overheating and poor battery life. But this is yet to be seen.

So stay tuned, more details will be posted on this Gateway NS10I mini laptop as soon as we find new things.

More 11.6 inch mini laptops with AMD hardware pop out these days. The Gateway LT32 and Acer Aspire One 721 are two of them. I’m writing about both of them in the same post because they are identical both in terms of looks and features, although there is a small but significant difference between them.

You can get an idea on their looks from the picture below. Solid construction, decent materials, but nothing fancy. It’s nice to have the full-size keyboard I also have on my Acer 1825PT, plus what seems to be a properly sized trackpad.

Acer Aspire One 721

Inside are the goodies. Like I’ve said, both these machines are built on the AMD Nile platform, with the single core Athlon 2 Neo K125 (1.7 GHz), 2 GB of memory, ATI Radeon HD4225 graphics and 250 GB of storage space. Other features include 1.3 MPx webcam, WiFi N but not Bluetooth, card reader, good audio and Windows 7 Home Premium. Plus the 11.6 inch display with 1366 x 768 px resolution.

All these allow the machines to run nearly all your daily applications and handle 1080p HD content well (self stored and Flash from Youtube). There’s HDMI port to output movies on a bigger screen also. Still, don’t expect to run Video editing software or games on these mini laptops, but for everyday tasks, they’ll do just fine.

Gateway LT32

Having AMD inside does sacrifice battery life. The Acer AO 721 comes with a 6 Cell 4400 mAh battery and you’ll only going to squeeze around 5 hours out of it. The Gateway LT21 will probably pack the same one.

Now, for the difference. Acer sells the 721 for $429 right now in the States, with Free Shipping included. A fair price i could say. However, Gateway announced a starting price of $449 for the LT32. It’s not much of a difference, but since these devices are the same, what’s the point? Still, the Gateway is not yet available in stores, so hopefully they’ll come to their senses by the time it will.

All in all, both these machines are good picks. You do have alternatives though, like the HP Pavilion DM1z (also with Intel) or the Toshiba Satellite 210 (with ULV Intel and for sure better keyboard/trackpad, but a little bit more expensive). So better check out all your options before reaching any decision.

I was telling you the other days Gateway is planning to go on PineTrail too, with their 10 inch LT21 series. Well, they already did, and Lee from minifrag.com just got his new device and posted a couple of first impressions and unboxing pictures.

This mini notebook packs the new Intel N450 processor, 1 GB of RAM and GMA 3150 graphics and scores a 2.4 Windows 7 mark (very close to the Asus 1008P-KR i tested last week). Overall performance is OK but there’s only a 3 Cell battery available for the device. On paper, this should take for 5 hours of life; Lee hadn’t had the chance to run a proper battery test yet, but i doubt he’ll be able to get anything past 3.5 hours . And that means quite a poor battery life.

On the outside, the device is decently built and light (weighs only 2.4 lbs). You also get a pretty good keyboard (not actually a chiclet one, but more something like the one we saw on some Acer computers) and a large touchpad, as you can see from the picture.

Overall, Gateway’s LT2102H is a standard 10 inch netbook with the new generation hardware. However, there’s nothing extraordinary that would make pick this device over others, and this is luckily reflected in the attractive price, as this mini laptop only costs $299.

More pictures and details on Lee’s site.

Gateway just anounced a new toy at CES and it’s actually pretty interesting. With just an 11.6 inch display, it’s actually compact and light and could be easily placed in the nerbooks class. However, hardware inside make it more: a powerful ultra-thin mini laptop with nice autonomy and a decent price.

And speaking of that hardware, this Gateway EC14D is one of the first 11.6 inch devices built on CULV architecture. See specs below:

Intel ULV S4100 processor (1.3 GHz)

11.6 inch HD display (1366×768 px) , LED backlit

Intel GS45 chipset and GMA 4500MHD graphics

4 GB of memory

320 GB hard-drive

integrated DVD player

multi-touch touchpad

6 Cell battery

weighs only 3.6 lbs

All these make the EC14D quite a power-horse, in fact the most potent mini laptop in its class.

Gateway EC14D - powerfull 11.6 inch mini laptop

Of course, all these goodies come with a price, as the above configuration will sell for $629 . That’s nearly twice the price of a regular standard netbook, but if you want a trully powerfull travel notebook, this might be the one. What do you think, is the price fair for this Gateway EC14D ?

250 GB hard-drive

Intel GMA 3150 graphics

6 Cell battery (predicted 10 hours autonomy)

New gateway T21 10 inch netbook with PineTrail platform inside

However, this Gateway LT21 might have a strong point in front of the competition, as it is expected to hit the stores of only $299, while other PineTrail equipped netbooks go for at least $330. But we’ll just have to wait for a couple of weeks and see if this rumor will be true.

So stay tuned for more info on Gateway’s LT21 10 inch netbook.
