Just $99 for the Lanyu eBook LY-EB01 netbook
Yeah, that’s correct, Chinese producer Lanyu announced they’ll be selling a netbook for the mere price of just $99 . Called Lanyu eBook LY-EB01 , this device is by far the cheapest netbook on the market at the moment.
For this amount of money you wouldn’t expect to get too much, so you might get surprised to find out that that Lanyu houses:
- a 7 inch screen, 800 x 480 pixels resolution
- a 266MHz AK7802Q216 ARM processor
- 128 Mb of RAM
- up to 8 GB flash storage space
- Wi-fi 802.11 b/g
Of course this config can’t run a modern OS, so you have to stick with the Windows CE 5.0 . A 1800mAh battery comes with this netbook, and although it might seem small, the components are not at all power-hungry , thus you will be able to get a battery life of 5 to 7 hours (whether you turn the Wi-fi on or not) for the eBook LY-EB01 . Oh, and the device is very compact, measuring 8.4″ x 5.6″ x 1.2″ and weighting just 1.3 lbs .

Just $99 for the Lanyu ultra-compact netbook
The price is around $99. Actually, it’s 97$ for the version without Wi-fi and only 2 GB storage space. Adding extra storage and Wireless connectivity will increase the price with just around 10 bucks. Still, cheaper than any such device produced before.
And yes, i do agree this is not a netbook for me or anyone in the US or Europe. But, it’s not meant for us, it’s meant for reaching poorer markets like those in Asia and Africa, where such low priced devices could really have an impact. And I do believe this is only one of the first such affordable netbooks, as more less known producers will try to attack this yet unaddressed target in the near future. Don’t you think?

I’m an American and that netbook looks pretty good to me! Of course it wouldn’t be for replacing my laptop or desktop but for that size and price it is perfect for working on documents & surfing the internet while out and about.
