Netbook Buyer’s Guide – what you should know before buying a netbook
Hey folks, I finally managed to finalize the first edition of my netbook buyer’s guide called “How to pick the perfect netbook for you” .
I started this with only one thing in mind: try to help those looking for a netbook understand more about these mini laptops. At first, I planned to keep it simple, but as I started addressing the problems and questions a potential buyer might have, it ended with around 25 pages (and this is only the first version; updates are to follow shortly).
I’m not going to get into many details, you should get the e-book for that, but I’m going to tell you what are the main chapters of this guide:
- Short introduction (with the purpose of this ebook, my expertise in this domain, etc).
- What is a netbook (definition, particularities and a short comparison to the standard laptop).
- What you should know about the main hardware specs of a netbook.
- How to pick the netbook that better suits your needs?
- Types of netbooks (with a couple of recommendation of good devices in 7-9″, 10″ and 11″+ classes)
- Must have accessories and upgrades for your netbook.
- Where can you get the best prices and deals for netbooks?
- Conclusion (what the future hold in store and, is this a good time to buy a netbook, etc).
Some sections will be developed more thoroughly in future updates and also some new chapters might get in, as things change pretty quickly in this “universe” (remember that netbooks were not even around 2 years ago).
Update as of march 2010
I’ve rewritten some parts of the guide and added details on the PineTrail Atom platform and Windows 7 OS. Also, all the recommended devices are up-to-date now and I’ve added some new sections, like tablet netbooks and touch slates. But these are only some of the important changes, lots of minor details we’re modified and I for one hope, improved.
For the time being, i am offering this guide for free, no strings attached. You can just download it via the link bellow in the article.
However you should know that in the near future the guide will remain free, but will only be available for those who are willing to subscribe to this site’s newsletter. Also, I plan to offer periodical updates (the first one in just a couple of weeks, as with Windows 7 out pretty soon, I’m sure there will be some changes in this segment), and these updates will only be available for those subscribed to newsletter or RSS feed. So, you should subscribe if you haven’t already, cause this site offers useful info about netbooks and everything related to them, with news, comparisons, reviews, etc. Ans since you’re looking for a netbook, any of the posts in here would interest you somehow.
In the end, i do hope you will find the info in this guide useful. I really am looking for any kind of feedback, comments, etc. I did my best to offer a good product, but you should know that English is not my native language, so… you get the point. Anyway, i would mostly appreciate if you told me what parts of the guide might require improvements and what other questions of yours (regarding netbooks) remained still unanswered. If you’d be kind to send those to me, please do it by leaving a comment on this post or via the Contact page.
That’s it for now, just click the big button bellow to get the Netbook Buyer’s Guide (will take you to a separate .pdf file and you can save it from there – this might not work on IE and Chrome; or easier, right-click to below link and then choose “Save link as” or “Save target as” and you’ll be able to save the e-book on your computer):
———–
Download the latest version – it’s absolutely FREE
———–
Older versions:
- fall 2009 – download here
Before downloading, you should read the Terms And Conditions and know that you can only get the e-book if you agree to them (there’s nothing weird in there, just common sense Copyright protection stuff).
And by the way, if you like this guide, please twit about it, stumble it, add this link to your Facebook wall or any of the other options below.
Thank you for your time and really looking for your feedback!

What is a netbook? How can you really define a netbook?

I would update it with the pine trail N450 specs. I kind of lost interest after that wasn’t up to date.
And I think you should explain what people will see in performance different to their everyday computing lives when you update that section.
I think you should link to a page that you constantly update with models that fall into the categories you create. Its great to divide them, but I’m curious what your model recommendations are.
Not a bad little guide over all. Might feature it after you rework it.
I know Nicolle. I’ve been planing to update it but was waiting for more PineTrail equipped netbooks to get on the market. I’ll have a new version in the next weeks.
