Pressure – is this the future for touch-displays?
At the moment, there are two popular different types of touch-displays available on the market:
- resistive screens - the cheapest and least responsive of the two, they are used on entry level products (more details here)
- capacitive screens – made famous by the iPhone, this technology allows snappier controls with multi-touch gestures and many other goodies (more details here)
Pressure touch displays - countless new control options
So, while our touch-displays are now controlled by swiping or pinching, there’s a new generation at out door, one that will allow far more control methods and will be able to distinguish between a gentle touch and a hard poke: the pressure-sensing touch-display technology.
Although this technology is not new and we already saw it implemented on large scale screens like Microsoft’s Surface, Peratech, an UK based company, is the closest to getting it available on smaller displays, perfect for mobile use on smart-phones, tablets and netbooks. The important part is that we will see such displays on gadgets as early as April this year. Peratech officials declared that they already signed with a big screen producer for manufacturing these pressure-sensitive displays, so we might see some gadgets with new interactive facilities by the middle of the year. And possibilities for using the new displays are actually countless!
