With so many new netbooks entering the market these last weeks, it was finally time for a new list with the best netbooks in the 10 inch class, based on my personal experience with them and reviews from buyers all around the world.

However, having so many good choices on the market, it was pretty difficult to make a top, that’s why i divided the article in 3 parts: cheap netbooks, mainstream and “money are not a problem” devices. You can read about each of them below.

Also, i have to add that prices might vary for each model in time, and you should check the links for the updated ones at the time you read this post.

And last but not least, i have to mention that only the new generation PineTrail netbooks have been included in this top (there might be exceptions when older gen devices get extra-hot prices).

If you happen to live in the UK, you can also read this other post about the best netbooks available on the UK market these days (updates for the Canadian and German market will be available soon too).

Best netbooks for budget oriented customers

If budget is your main concern but you’re still looking for a nice device, than these laptops in here are the ones for you. They come with the new hardware and improved autonomy, but in most cases will come with 3 or 4 Cell batteries, poorer keyboards and no Bluetooth.

Asus EEEPC 1001P – $299- see full review

Matte Asus 1001P

While usually Asus netbooks are not known for their competitive prices, with the new 1001P series built on PineTrail, they tried to show us that good netbooks can also be very affordable.

Thus, this 10 inch device is one of the best mini laptops if budget is your first concern. It has almost no noticeable flaws, although the small storage space (only 160 GB) might be an issue. Besides that, it just offers all the features you’ll need from a small portable computer, with even a battery life of up to 11 hours (on paper, more like 8 in practice). The nice Seashell design we already now, good build quality and software package are here too. For more details, please read the more thorough review of the 1001P.

Prices start from only $299 $279 and uou’ll notice that you can get them in various colors, by clicking that link. If you want this mini laptop in a black/white non glossy, you can get it for $329 (also with bigger 250GB hard-drive and Bluetooth). All these with Free Shipping included within US boarders. Click the links for more details about each of the products, reviews, pictures and the option to buy them, if you want to.

Acer AO532h – from $279 – see full review

Glossy Acer Aspire One 532h

Like Asus above, Acer too offers a cheap version of their AO532h line, for only $279. You get the same PineTrail hardware and 160 GB hard-drive as, but a smaller up to 8 hours autonomy. Besides these, the 1001P and the cheap AO532 are almost identical in terms of features, with a small bonus to the Acer machine that offers fast Wi-Fi N wireless connectivity (while the Asus only offers Wi-Fi b/g).

Overall, this affordable 10 inch netbook is fairly appreciated and benefits of very good reviews and marks from previous buyers, mostly because it is a reliable computer and one of the most affordable on the market.

Speaking of prices, the AO532 sell for around $279 in the States right now, with some of them even cheaper. That’s with Free Shipping included and some nice discount; plus, you get a couple of different color themes to choose from: Matrix Silver, Onyx Blue, Amethyst Purple or Ruby Red. Click the links for more details, pictures, reviews from buyers or the option of buying one yourself.

All in all, the Asus 1001P and the Acer Ao532 are fairly similar devices. Picking one of the two will only depend on taste; as both devices are nearly identical in terms of features, there’s only the aspect to differentiate them (matte – Asus vs glossy – Acer). And perhaps build quality, which i consider a little better for the Asus.

For more options of fair-priced mini laptops, you should check out this post with available PineTrail netbooks under $300.

Mainstream netbooks – best in terms of performances/price

Want a netbook overall good that won’t leave a hole in your wallet? Than one of the mainstream netbooks in here is what you need. They provide the standard hardware based on PineTrail Atom platform, decent performances and excellent autonomy, while looking good and having price tags around $400, but enhanced with some extra goodies: chiclet keyboards, ergonomic touchpads with multi-touch, Bluetooth, etc.

Toshiba NB305 – $399 from $349 – see full review

Toshiba NB305 - overall, my personal choice

This is in fact at the moment my favorite 10 inch netbook. It’s not the best in every aspect, but overall is the perfect choice and the most comfortable on a daily base use. These without being too expensive.

And speaking of the price, you’ll reckon that this one just makes it in the under $400 category, with a tag of $399 (in the meantime it got cheaper). But, it has its strong points over the competition: the best keyboard+touchpad in the class, matte body with excellent construction quality and noise-free operating are only some of them. For more, i’d advice you to read my full review of the NB305 series.

This Toshiba is also offered in many versions and different color options, with prices varying right now between $350 and $380. You can see more info about them via this link, where you’ll also find more technical details, pics and reviews+marks from previous buyers.

There are even some options with the new N455 processor and support for DDR3 memory between those you can see via the link above, so if you dig the new technology, you could go for these. But there’s not really a big difference between the two in terms of performance.

You’ll also notice there’s a cheaper NB305 that only sells for around $299, but if i were you, I’d ignore it (see the review for the reasons).

Asus 1005PE-P – $399 from $299 – see full review

Asus 1005PE with its two versions

The 1005PEs are Asus’s top netbooks series in the 10 inch class. They provide everything Asus has to offer best and do come with very good price tags. In fact, their only flaws are the glossy exterior and display and the single-click button touchpad, and even these are pretty minor.

Especially if you consider that they are compensated by the best battery life in the class, ergonomic chiclet keyboard, excellent construction and connectivity options, plus a fairly rich and useful software package.

The 1005PE is offered in two distinctive versions, the top one being the 1005PE-P, that sells for $399 in the US and comes with 14 hours autonomy and lots of features. You should see my complete review on it for more info.

If it caught your interest, you should know this is one of the most popular netbooks on Amazon right now, with very good reviews and marks from those who already own one.

However, the top version is pretty expensive at around $380 bucks. Also, the 1005PR, which is the same device, only with a HD display (1366 x 768 px) and Braodcom 3D accelerator for better multimedia performance, goes for $399.

Still, if you can live with poorer battery life (only around 11 hours) and no Bluetooth, there’s the 1005PE-M versions the currently sell for $299 (for some color schemes) and that is really a great deal.

All these devices are available in Black, White, Pink or Blue, and by clicking any of the links above you will see more details, reviews and get the option to buy one of these great Asus EEE PCs for perhaps the best prices you can get in the States (and from Amazon.com, which is a very reliable source).

Asus 1015PED/PE – $379 , the new generation of Seashells

This is a very fresh device and one we’ve been expecting for a while. It is the successor of the 1005PE line and comes with some improvements and upgrades.

Asus EEE PC 1015PED

First, Asus finally decided to dump that glossy finish for a complete matte one, so the 1015PE come with soft matte plastic covers, that allows better grip and are a lot better when dealing with smudges and scratches. Then, they’ve worked on the trackpad, replacing it with a new one, bigger and clearly separated from the palm rest area. Plus the brought a new webcam, rearranged ports more ergonomically and slightly improved the materials used for the entire chassis. Too bad that screen is still glossy though.

Of course, the biggest changes are inside, as the 1015PED brings a new faster processor (1.83 GHz N475) and DDR3 memory, alongside the standard storage (with free EEE Storage included) and top notch connectivity. Battery life dropped a little bit, to only up to 13 hours for the 6 Cell battery option, but hey, we get better performances so that’s well worth it.

All in all, the Asus EEE PC 1015PED/series will be a bestseller in this second half of 2010, managing to combine the pros of the previous EEE PCs and fix the problems customers complained on them.

Right now the 1015PED goes for $379 in the States, with Free Delivery included, and that’s actually a fair and affordable price, based on what it offers. You can get it in 4 different colors: White, Black, Blue or Red, all for the same price for the moment. Check the link for more details, pictures, reviews or the option to buy one.

I’m looking forward to get this machine for tests as well. But based on early impressions and feedback available online, this seems like the machine to buy right now in the 10 inch mainstream class.

MSI Wind U160 – from $349

MSI Wind U160 - the newcomer

One of the latest entries in the 10 inch class, and quite an entrance it was, is the MSI Wind U160, the fanciest of their new line of netbooks built on PineTrail.

This one comes with improved looks and similar features as the above (including the chiclet keyboard, connectivity and nice hardware), but promises an even better battery life than the Asus 1005PE-P, up to 15 hours on paper. However, expect it to be around 10 hours tops in practice.

It is available in two different colors, Black or Gold and offers standard specs and features: N450 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 250 GB storage, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi N, Windows 7 Starter. In fact, it is pretty much comparable to the similarly priced mini laptops above. However, i have to admit i really like the design, which seems to be inspired from the Vaios.

Right now, the Winds U160 go for $379 for the Gold version, while the Black one is discounted and sells for $349. Both with Delivery included. By clicking this link you’ll be able to see more pics and technical details, plus reviews from previous buyers.

Dell Mini 10 – $349

Although not a particular fan of the Dell Mini 10 series, i could not let this netbook out of this list, as it’s fairly popular and appreciated in the US. It’s main advantage is the possibility to configure it just the way you want it. So, while prices start from $279, a decent device will run for at least $349, with the new N450 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 250 GB hard-drive, 6 Cell battery and Windows 7 Starter as an OS (similar features as the other premium netbooks in this class offer). However, even with these equipment levels, the Mini 10 is not a rival for the Toshiba or Asus device, that can outperform it in nearly every aspect: looks, autonomy, ergonomics, etc.

However, the Mini 10 can be upgraded with some extra parts the opponents won’t offer, with the mobile broadband module being only one of them. Still, these upgrades will make for some very high price tags, and they are just not worth it.

Update: There are however a couple of pre-configured Dell Mini 10s I consider worth the money, you can check them out below (in the mean time they might have become unavailable, but I’ll add other if i spot anything interesting):

Dell Inspiron iM1012 – $389 + Free Shipping – available in a multitude of colors (black, pink, white, green, red, blue, etc – Update: actually, only the Black/Blue models are in stock for now), this Dell offers a new look and superior build quality over the previous generation, while still providing good performance for an even better price. As you can see, it can be tours for only $389 from Amazon (the black version is even cheaper), and that with Free delivery included. In fact, it’s the best price I could spot online on every US based store.

And there are some other interesting devices you should check out in this class and in this price range. You will find them listed below, with links towards more detailed posts, as i come in contact with them. The Lenovo S10-3t tablet ($489) and matte Samsung N150 in Blue ($299) and rugged and tough Samsung NB30 built for the road are just some of the netbooks i’m currently considering adding to the list.

Fancy and exclusive netbooks – best money can buy

If all the above are just not enough for you and you’re prepared to pay $400-$700 bucks for a 10 inch mini laptop, than the devices in this category are the ones for you. They are just the best money can buy and offer some fancy features and aesthetics, like touch-sensitive HD displays, metallic cases and stellar battery life.

However, i will not insist too much on this category, mainly because in the 10 inch class, you can hardly find anything above $400 really worth that kind of money. You do get the HP 5102 with a metallic casing and lots of customization options (touch display, carrying handle, fast 7200 rpm HDD, extra memory, big battery), which can easily jump even to 1000 bucks, but you will still end with the same level of performance offered by other cheaper netbooks. So are you really sure you want to pay that much extra for “details”?

Of course, if you’re looking for exclusivity and fancy looks, you can try some of the options for designer netbooks, like the Asus 1008P-KR signed by Karim Rashid (costs around $490 and is available in Coffee Brown or Hot Pink . Comes with 2 batteries and a very sleek matching leather case). Or even better, the extra-feminine HP Mini 210 Vivienne Tam, which is something every girl would love to have (I’ve seen it too and I must say it’s impressive, with high quality finishing and solid construction. Still, the color and the design make it a clearly a mini laptop for a girl.) This one has a list price of around 700 bucks, but you can find it on Amazon.com for $570 (also check here pics and reviews from owners). And there’s a matching mouse for it too, from the same designer, available for 25 bucks. Plus a matching case, for around $10.

Fancy netbooks - HP 210 Vivienne Tam (left) and Asus 1008P Karim Rashid (right)

That’s about it for now. If the post was useful, please tell your friends about it or leave a comment. And like i already said, as time passes and new devices will enter the market, you’ll see changes. So make sure you check this one periodically. Also prices and availability might change in time, so be sure to check the links for each product for up-to-date details.

If you liked the products in this list but don’t quite have the budget for them, keep an eye on our section of deals were we periodically add the interesting offers we might spot online (they are only available for limited periods of time in most cases, so the best way to keep in touch is to subscribe to this site via RSS or email).

In the end, i can only hope i could give you a hand in deciding which of the current 10 inch netbooks is the best for your needs and budget. Once again, I have to say that is a list of recommended mini laptops you will be able to find on the US market. They might not be available in some other countries or have different names, that’s why I’ll also put together a similar post useful for you guys in Canada, Europe (will be available soon) and hopefully for the Asian market too.

Thanks once again for your time and don’t forget, feedback would be greatly appreciated.

After finding the early details about Intel’s ultra-thin Canoe Lake mini laptop yesterday, it’s now time for more info, as Sascha at netbooknews.de managed to snag the little device and shot a quick video.

Words are kind of in vain here, the clip bellow will speaks for itself.

However, like I’ve said before this netbook is incredibly thin, being able to rival with the likes of Vaio X or Dell Adamo, but hopefully with a better price tag (in fact, Intel announced such devices could be sold for around $600 next year).

Of course, there are no indications Intel will ever produce such a mini laptop, this is just a prototype. However, others will certainly do. It’s amazing how they managed to squeeze inside a new dual-core Atom N550 inside (with HT) , 2 GB of memory, a decent size HDD (they don’t use an SSD, most likely a 1.8 inch Hard-drive unit) and a 44Wh battery (that bulkier part above the keyboard).

At 14 mm, the Canoe Lake is the thinnest netbook right now, even thiner than a phone

Also, the 10.1 inch display comes with true 720p resolution (1280 x 720 px), although it can scale up to 1366 x 768 px with some skews and distortions.

And despite the increased resolution, it’s even more impressive how snappy the device performs. Sascha says this is by far the fastest netbook he has ever seen, and I’d bet he saw a few. However, seeing that CPU 10 – 15% occupied while on idle, that kind of bothered me.

OK, enough with this, see the clip below.

Now, the good thing about the Canoe Lake is that it tells us how future netbooks might look like. Given a year or two, we could end with mainstream 10-12 inchers weighing less than 2 pounds, measuring up to 15 mm and providing good everyday performances. Would you buy one of those? I know I would and I’d bet many of you would too.

And they say there’s no future for netbooks. Ha!

At the moment, Intel clearly dominates the netbooks market, their ATOM platforms being a part of a vast majority of such devices sold these days. However, their current spear-head, the N450, kind of disappointed most of us netbook fans with its poor performances and might have been an important factor for the decrease for netbooks demand in the last months.

Thus, in order for this segment to grow, changes are needed. And both AMD and Intel are working on it. In the following lines you will see what each of them has in store for us for the next period of time.

Let’s start with Intel.

First on their list is the launch of a dual-core processor meant for these mini laptops. It will most likely bear the code name N500 and will run at 1.5 GHz, while offering increased Cache memory (1 MB, compared to 512 KB for the N450). This is expected to boost performance levels, especially when Intel will pair the new CPU with a Broadcom chip or Nvidia’s new ION technology. The N500 will enter the market by the start of the summer and the first devices with it on-board should be available after a couple of months.

Also later this year Intel plans to launch new ULV processor part of their Capella platform, that should easily fit 11.6 and 12 inch devices, starting with the Celeron U3400 . It should be launched in Q3 2010 and available on computers in stores by the end of the year.

As for nettops, Intel plans to have the D525 Atom processor ready for the winter sales period, with better 1.83 GHz speed than the actual D510 and DDR3 support, while boosting a 13 Wh TDP. More details on Fudzilla.

Of course, these changes won’t really affect the vast majority of Atom powered netbooks that will still be shipped with the N450. There’s no plan to update the ATOM line as early as second half of 2011, when the Cedar Trail platform should get its debut. Of course, this chip is still in development and there are no exact details on what will it offer, but rumors and speculations emerge weekly.

Based on what we know now, the Cedar Trail replacement for the N450 will be based on a 32nm process and will boost a 5W TDP while benefiting from a fanless design. Will support DDR3 memory, but there are not details on speed and cache. Also, it will probably offer 1080P wireless streaming (with the help of a special adapter) and will have HD support via HDMI or DisplayPort. As for operating systems, the new platform will work with Windows 7, Intel’s Meego OS and probably Chrome (source).

So, while Intel plans some tweaks on their platforms for 2010, the major changes will only come in late 2011.

But how about AMD?

There’s already the Acer AO521 around with intriguing AMD hardware inside, boosting a single core 1.2 GHz processor (the AMD V105) with DDR 3 support and 512 KN cache, plus the M880G chipset and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 graphics, all with only 9W TDP. This CPU is the slowest single core Geneva processor of the AMD Nile platform and we should see more on it in the near future. So, AMD plans a platform that could get closer to the Atoms in terms of energy efficiency and would provide better performances than the N450 + GMA 3150 combo.

Also, earlier this year there were rumors the guys at AMD were working on a new platform meant to go head to head with Intel’s ATOM, called the Bobcat. Part of the Fusion line, it was supposed to be available in late 2011, but AMD managed to move ahead of schedule and recent news makes me confident we’re going to see the Bobcat in action sooner.

Recent rumors speak of AMDs Ontario chip based on the Bobcat architecture, aimed at netbooks, tablets and low-powered computers in general. The Ontario will be a system on a chip (SoC) device built on the 40 nm process. It will use two x86 cores (so we have a dual-core chip) and will be DRR3 compliant. Will also offer DirectX 11 compatible graphic solutions, but there are no details on this aspect for now. All in all, according to AMD, the Ontario chip will be able to run 90 per cent of today’s “mainstream performance” in less than half of die area, while some versions being sub-1W capable.

So, as you can see, not much will change for AMD this year also. The Nile platform might have some impact, but i doubt it will be able to shake Atoms too much.

Conclusions

Of course, for the moment it’s way too early to draw conclusions on the future of netbooks, but with AMD being more involved in this segment, only good things will come out of it.

Their chips are already present on some 11.6 and 12 inch devices and will surely enter the 10 inch segment too, once they manage to make them more power-efficient. However, we won’t probably see too many changes in this segment this year. For 2011 though, with both AMD and Intel planning new platform with quite some interesting new features, the battle will get fierce.

In the end, we, netbook buyers will be the one benefiting for this fight between Intel and AMD. Cause where’s competition, there’s also improvement. So stay tuned on this site for more info on AMD’s and Intel’s plans and actions in the next months and years.

Well, that would be a great news. It doesn’t really matter that the new netbooks can offer HD video playing and offer HD ready displays and 15+ hours of battery life like the MSI Wind U160 if they can’t offer a comfortable and snappy experience when running more than 2-3 daily applications.

The heart of the problem are the PineTrail CPUs. The only existing one for mini laptops at the moment, the N450 1.66 GHz Atom, offers no real increase in performances over the previous N270/N280 that are nearly 2 years old. Intel is working on this domain, announcing the N470 slightly faster CPU (1.83 GHz) and the N455/N575 lines with DDR3 memory support. But still, this are just minor improvements.

However, there are rumors claiming that Intel is working on new PineTrail based Dual-Core processors for netbooks, in the N500 line. There’s already the N510 found on a couple of nettops, but they do have to work on heat dissipation and TDP if they want to be able to insert one of these in the more compact body of a mini laptop.

For now, there are no exact details on when will these new processors be available on the market, how much will they cost or how will they be named. But the potential for them is huge, so having such low power dual-core processor with a decent price is definitely a thing Intel should be working on. Just think on how good will a combo between these CPUs and the new ION look on a 10 incher that will cost just around 450 bucks and will be able to run nearly all kind of applications you might want (except for games).

Hands-on videos from CeBIT 2010 are started popping around and right now we have two from Sascha at netbooknews.com .

First there’s the 10 inch convertible Gygabyte T1000p. very much similar to the Asus T101MT is just tested, brings the same PineTrail hardware and resistive display, only this time it’s a HD ready one with increased resolution (1366 x 768 px). Responsiveness from the screen is still not that great, although Sascha declared himself satisfied with the performance. That would be quite odd for this device to perform better than the similar Asus, as with the bigger resolution also comes a bigger lust for the insufficient resources. Anyway, check out for more details in the video below.

And there’s the fancy Asus 1018P, the replacement of the 1001P Karim Rashid (a series that proved to be not too popular). Comes with PineTrail hardware and a very slick and thin body. There’s a new case made of aluminum and based on what you can see in the video bellow and Sascha’s first impressions, this is at the moment by far the most solid EEE PC ever made . Check out the video and stay tuned for a more detailed post later on.

Rumors of an imminent N470 appeared last week, but now the new Atom processor is finally official. In fact, this is a somewhat faster version of the N450, as it runs at 1,83 GHz, when compared to only 1.66 GHz for the older model.

Besides that, the platform is identical, the same Pine Trail with on-chip GMA 3150 graphics and hyper-threading , plus the good battery consumption. So, although the N470 offers a slightly faster clock speed, don’t expect a noticeable improvement in terms of performance over the N450.

Anyway, this processor is already present in some mini laptops, like the Lenovo S10-3t. And like expected, from the early reviews, performances are pretty sluggish.

So, this new N470 is here and will be added to more and more netbooks in the near future; just don’t have high expectations from it. In fact, don’t have any expectations at all.

We already know that none of the existing Atoms can play HD content decently, nor self-hosted or streamed from online sources (flash clips). The best are the older Zxx, with H.264 decoding on their GMA 500 graphics, but even those can’t handle more than 720p videos from the hard-drive. The more common N270/N280s or the new N450s are even worse.

Rumors say that Intel will be able to add on-chip HD-decoding no sooner than late 2011, but the demand for HD content is present and is urgent. Thus, they decided to join forces with Broadcom and offer their Atoms bundled with the Broadcom BCM70015 accelerator (probably connected via mini PCI-e). Of course, there’s going to be also the Nvidia Ion 2 solution, but this one will be a lot cheaper. It won’t offer the same performances, as games will still be a no-no for netbooks built on this config, but at least we’ll have the HD playing option.

In the end, it seems that a new class of netbooks will be born, situated between the standard mainstream versions( that cost around $350) and the high end 3D capable mini laptops (that will probably run for around $500). They will have price tags of around $400, as that Broadcom accelerator is pretty cheap, will allows users to watch HD content online and offline, but won’t permit them to play too many games. Still, while these new netbooks will get better in terms of HD playing, overall performance levels will remain low, because of the same Intel Atom processors behind the entire platform. Hopefully, we’ll see some improvements in this domain also, and soon.

I told you folks in a recent post what a netbook is and what you should expect from a netbook. But, it seems that most people are not really interested in what netbooks are but more in the difference between netbooks and laptops. I do recommend you read the previous article too, but in this little post I’ll try to explain shortly the basic differences between the two laptop types.

But now, let’s see who wins this hypothetical battle of a netbooks versus laptop.

Weight and dimensions

Netbooks are known for their compact form and low footprint. Most of them have screens between 7 to 10 inches, but bigger 11.6 inches models have emerged lately. They are also very light, somewhere between 2 lbs for the small versions (and even lower) to 3.2 for the big ones.

Laptops on the other side are bigger and bulkier. Most of them have screen sizes from 14″ to 17″ and even 19″. There are also 13.3″ versions, but those come with other downfalls. And, since they are bigger, they are heavier also. My last 15.4″ laptop for example weighted around 5.5 lbs. Add 1 lbs for the charger and a couple of lbs for the other things in the bag… and you get the point.

Display size

Like i told you before, since laptops are smaller, they do come with smaller screens and resolutions. That is of course translated in a smaller workspace. Nowadays mainstream 10″ netbooks come with 1024 x 600 px res, and the next to come 11.6″ ones will have 1366 x 768 px .

8.9" netbook vs 15.4" laptop

The 15.4 laptops on the other side come with 1280 x 800 px (have a bigger dpi rapport, so everything is bigger on them and easier to read) or even 1650 x 1050 px. Bigger laptops can even come with Full HD resolutions.

Battery life

Netbooks are meant to be portable, thus a decent battery life is a must. Most offer at least around 5 hours of real autonomy, while the best can go up to 8-9 hours from a 6 Cell battery.

Few laptops can offer the same things. Of course, there are some, like the new ultra-portable Vaios on the new Macbooks, but they cost many times more than a netbook.

Price tags

Standard netbooks run for $200 to $450 , according to size and features. A good 10″ like the Asus 1005HA for example, with decent hardware and 10.5 hours battery life will only cost you around $360, while being light, durable and good looking.

Laptops on the other side can go for a lot more. It’s true some producers try to offer 15.4″ laptops for around $350 these days, but, you will get crappy hardware and crappy build quality, all in a heavy and bulky device. And that’s just not worth it.

Performance level

Here’s where the line is really drawn. Netbooks’ performances are limited by the hardware inside: they used low voltage CPUs that can only offer so much. They are good for everyday activities and even watching HD ready movies (720p, not 1080p), but not for games and other resources hungry applications. Performances level will increase in the future, with devices housing the Nvidia Ion platform (better graphic performances) and the new Intel CPU line, Pine Trail . But laptops will always be more powerful. Some a lot more powerful actually.

Conclusion

As a wrap up, netbooks are compact and portable devices good enough for regular applications, while laptops can offer better performances, but for a bigger price and sacrificing autonomy and portability. For me, my netbook is the mobile travel companion, while i have a primary desktop computer back home that can give me all the power i need.

So, if you’re in need of a powerful device with a bigger working space area, you will have to get a laptop. If you still want it to be light and have a good battery life, you will have to pay a lot for it, way above $1000.

But, if you don’t need that much power and you’re looking for a device that could easily be carried around and used for every-day actions (surfing the web, watching videos, listening to music, writing texts, blogging etc ), than you have to go for a netbook. You’ll get one for around $350 easily.

In the end, i hope laptops vs netbooks article helped you better understand the differences between a netbook and a laptop/notebok. Choosing the one for you it’s your choice and you should pick the device that better satisfies your needs.

Specs are just standard: 1.66 GHz N450 processor, 1 GB of memory, 160 GB hard-drive, 10.1 inch display (1024 x 600 px resolution), Wi-fi N+ Bluetooth and a 6 Cell battery. Plus Windows 7 Starter as the OS. And there also might be an optional 3G option available.

As for the looks, check out the pictures below (with more via the source at the end of the post).

All in all, the X140 is just a standard 10 inch netbook, based on specs and pictures. We should also expect good price tags for it. No word on its exact value for now, nor on availability. But stay tuned for more info.

Intel’s Atoms dominated the netbooks market during msot of 2008 and 2009 with their two series, the standard N270/N280 and the low-consumption Zxx series. This year, we’ve seen the new Pine Trail line, with the N450 and N470 replacing the older N270/N280 as mainstream processors for netbooks. They are already part of many mini laptops and impress not with their performance, but with their low power need.

Now, rumors say Intel is also working on a replacement line for their Zxx line, called Oak Trail, according to Japanese site PC Watch reports . Keeping the Zxx tradition, these processor should consume even less power than the N450, while offering somewhat poorer performances.

But, at this moment, i doubt there’s a need for such a platform. Already the PineTrail line does good in terms of battery life, with many netbooks allowing over 10 hours of life on a single charge. However, performances are the part where things could greatly improve.

Still, offering even more energy-efficient CPUs could benefit the emerging tablets and the smaller netbooks, making devices like the ultra-compact Vaio X more affordable.

But for now the entire Oak Trail story is just a rumor, we’ll just have to wait and see more in the near future.
